Myotherapy in North Melbourne

Waking up in the morning and feeling stiff, or managing ongoing aches and pains, is not normal. It is not just a part of getting older or something that you ‘just have to put up with’.

Whether you have had a niggling backache for 20 years, or pain that has come from a sports injury, myotherapy can help you become pain free again.

Urban Leopard combines myotherapy to treat with the symptoms of pain and weight training to rehabilitate the muscle and treat the cause of your pain.

Our North Melbourne myotherapy facilities include treatment rooms and a well-equipped gym – so your personalised treatment plan can take place right outside the door of your treatment room – and you become part of a community that work together to beat pain!

What Techniques do Our North Melbourne Myotherapists Use and How Do They Work?

Deep Tissue Massage

This is not your typical relaxation or remedial massage. There are no aromatherapy oils, no gliding across your muscles or spa style music. Our deep tissue massage in Brunswick involves deep, sustained, focused work on certain areas, using our own wax (made from beeswax, shea butter and coconut oil) to create friction, gripping the muscle to manipulate trigger points. The strokes we use are slow, deliberate and deep. The slow pace is important because it means that you can relax into the movement, rather than tense up against the pressure.

Dry Needling

This technique really focuses on the trigger points. A small acupuncture needle is inserted into the centre of the active trigger point, which significantly reduces or even nullifies the muscle pain response. Your myotherapist will know where the trigger point is for each muscle – and even referred pain can be solved as this follows predictable patterns.

Myofascial Cupping

Using specialised cups, we put them on the skin and create a vacuum. This lifts the muscle and fascia vertically, directing the pressure away from the tissue. This creates immediate relief when applied on the trigger points and is intensely relaxing.

The reason myotherapy is so different from remedial massage, physiotherapy and even acupuncture is because of our knowledge of the power of trigger points.

What is a trigger point and why are they so important?

Every muscle has a trigger point. When this trigger point is active, it can be absolutely debilitating. Symptoms can include:

  • Spontaneous pain on movement

  • Constant ache

  • Numbness/tingling

  • Inflexibility

  • Weakness

Manipulating trigger points is how myotherapy treats pain. By pressing in the right place for 30 seconds to 2 minutes or inserting an acupuncture needle into the centre of the trigger point, we can instantly reduce and even completely remove the pain.
