Myotherapy in Fitzroy North
Urban Leopard is a myotherapy clinic founded by Moyan Phillips. From an early age, she was fascinated by athletes, having a dream to be a sprinter when she was just 8 years old. She says “even at 8 years old, I wanted to be fit, wanted to be strong, wanted to feel physically good as I possibly could”
With an active childhood, her interest in the possibilities of human movement, and her own athletic endeavours, it seemed a natural developement to end up working in some way with the body.
When she discovered Myotherapy, it was a perfect fit. Understanding the human body, learning anatomy, and studying biomechanical movement was only part of the interest – learning how a well-placed thumb can relieve ongoing pain was like a lightbulb moment for her.
In her first year of practice, a gym injury gave her ongoing severe pain in her shoulder. This meant that she couldn’t sleep on that side, was in severe pain when working on clients as a Myotherapist and thought she might have to change her career. She seeked the help of other ‘expert’ therapists but they weren’t able to solve her pain either – sports medicine doctors, physiotherapists and chiropractors - no one made any progress on her injury.
When Moyan began applying her own Myotherapy techniques to herself, she had a dramatic result and soon realised that she had the tools to fix her own pain herself all along. After massaging her shoulder, following her Myotherapy training, she reduced her pain by 70%. This lightbulb moment made her want to shout from the rooftops – Myotherapy is not just a theory; it works – and it works well.
Moyan truly believes in her own skillset. Time after time, she has had clients come in, stating that they have seen several other practitioners, and nothing has helped. Having been that person in pain, frustrated and disheartened, she knows that the thought of being pain free can seems like an impossible outcome. In that Moyan started up Urban Leopard, a Fitzroy myotherapy studio, to help everyday people to beat everyday pain.
How is Myotherapy Different from other Massage Techniques?
If you have ongoing pain issues, like a bad back, rotator cuff injury, jaw pain or clicking, or even a sports injury, finding relief can be a struggle. There are so many options available for relief, and it can be difficult to choose a service – do I need a chiropractor, remedial massage or a physiotherapist?
Chiropractor: A chiropractor performs hands-on spinal manipulation to restore mobility and provide drug free pain relief.
Osteopathy: An osteopath uses physical manipulation, stretching and massage for pain relief.
Physiotherapy: A physiotherapist focuses on exercise therapy, joint manipulation and manual resistance training to aid injury recovery and provide pain relief.
Sports Massage: A sports masseuse works primarily with the muscles in people who take part in regular physical activity, like footballers and athletes. Regular sports massage is seen to enhance performance, aid recovery and prevent injury.
Urban Leopard – Using Myotherapy to Get You Pain Free in Fitzroy North
Based on the research from JFK’s personal physician, Dr Janet Travelle, trigger point therapy was a technique that originated in America in the 1970s. Myotherapy was based on trigger point therapy and applies a multitude of techniques that focus on deactivating active trigger points in muscles, applying pressure through deep tissue massage, dry needling and cupping to nullify spontaneous pain on movement, chronic pain and even referred pain. The Urban Leopard difference is that not only do we get you pain free with our Myotherapy, techniques, we also look at the cause of your pain – often poor posture by weakened muscles – and work to improve your strength and form through our weight training.
